Viola da gamba player, conductor, composer, Head of the Institut für Alte Musik, Professor at Mozarteum Salzburg, and Visiting Professor at Royal College (London). Compared by the critics to Jasha Heifetz (“Diapason”) for his virtuosity, he attracted notice for his new approach to the viol and to the sound of the baroque repertoire. He performs as a soloist or conductor with the most famous orchestras (Wiener Philharmoniker, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in der Bowl Hall, Hollywood, Il Giardino Armonico, Freiburger Barockorchestra, etc.). As one of the leaders of the ancient music scene, he shared the stage with musicians such as Gustav Leonhardt (duo), C. Bartoli, Reinhard Goebel, and Andràs Schiff, T. Quasthoff, and V. Mullova. He has been the assistant of Riccardo Muti at the Salzburger Festspiele. He has played with the lute player Luca Pianca and his brother Lorenzo Ghielmi in a duo since their youth. His ensemble, Il Suonar Parlante Orchestra, is regularly invited to the most important venues and is devoted to a new interpretation of the ancient music repertoire as well as to the creation of new projects and performed with important jazz players (K.Wheeler, Uri Caine, P.Fresu, M.Stockhausen) or the jazz star Carmen Linares. Vittorio recorded countless CDs as a soloist, winning many critic prizes. In the summer of 2018, he conducted Pygmalion by Rameau in the Drottningholms Slottsteater (Stockholm) with the company of Saburo Teshigawara. His fieldwork in old musical surviving traditions earned him the “Erwin Bodky Award” (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA 1997) and the prestigious Echo Klassic Award 2015 (Germany). His collaboration with traditional players is documented in the film “The Heart of Sound - A Musical Journey with Vittorio Ghielmi,” BFMI (Salzburg-Hollywood). He is Artistic Director of the festival for early and modern music ORA in Salzburg.
